I put this together myself (I'm 70 and female, but pretty handy). It took awhile, but I'm directionally challenged, and nowadays, directions are mostly pictures! There is a gap between the mattress and the bottom of the headboard. I purchased a 10" mattress. But I cover the gap with pillows. The headboard does not move around, and I do lean against it to read. Overall, I'm satisfied with the product, with the speed with which it was shipped, and would buy again.
